Spring 2019 Career Education News Roundup; Enrollment Underway

Community Colleges Target Industry Sectors Hiring Now with New Campus Resources

December 4, 2018—San Diego, CA—Career Education enrollment for the Spring 2019 term is now open in all six community college districts, including their continuing education centers, in San Diego and Imperial Counties. Area campuses offer new programs and facilities as part of the ongoing regional effort to prepare Career Education students for well-paying jobs in industry sectors hiring now.

New Programs and Facilities

Here what’s new in Career Education at the community colleges and continuing education centers in San Diego and Imperial Counties:

• MiraCosta College now offers a degree and certificate program in engineering technology. This program will prepare graduates to meet the growing demand for skilled engineering technicians for local companies that develop critical components for the aerospace, maritime, biomedical, beverage, and sports industries.

• A newly remodeled and state-of the-art space will open in January at San Diego City College for students in the HVAC, Electricity, Machine Technology, and Manufacturing programs.

• San Diego Mesa College will open its new Center for Business & Technology in January. It will include classrooms and laboratories for courses in the School of Business and Technology, which includes programs in areas such as web development, business administration, and hospitality.

• San Diego Continuing Education will celebrate the grand opening of a new Career Center at its Mid-City campus in January. This new center will give students more opportunities to assess their skills and interests, explore career paths, decide on their course of study, and then take action to pursue those goals.

• Southwestern College’s new Math and Science building will open in Spring 2019. Career education classes in the Life Sciences/Biotechnology industry sector will be offered in the new facility, which features a rooftop telescope along with 15 additional science classrooms. The expanded space will allow the college to offer new classes next semester, including the lab portion of a beer fermentation course.

Getting the Word Out to Area Students

To help spread the word about Career Education opportunities, San Diego and Imperial Counties’ community colleges will be hosting a regional K-14 counselor conference on Wednesday, December 5.

The region’s website, CareerEd.org, is a user-friendly resource to connect people with programs in industry sectors hiring now. The region’s top nine fastest-growing sectors are:

• Advanced Manufacturing

• Advanced Transportation and Logistics

• Global Trade

• Energy, Construction, and Utilities

• Health

• Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Digital Media

• Life Sciences and Biotechnology

• Business and Entrepreneurship

• Agriculture, Water, and Environmental Technologies

CareerEd.org also offers videos featuring student stories and an inside look into Career Education. Program faculty are experienced professionals in their field, and hands-on, work-based training is an integral part of the curriculum. At $46 per credit for Career Education at community colleges and free career training through continuing education centers, these programs are the most affordable option in California.
